2005 "R" Syrah

Return to Wine List

Syrah is the only wine I produce in which I don't name the grower on the label. That is because it is the only wine to come from more than a single vineyard. The 2005 wine is a blend from the Goodwin and Carter vineyards on the Estrella River plain North East of the town of Paso Robles. This region has distinguished itself as an appellation that produces Syrah that is strikingly similar to those of the McLaren Vale of Australia. This big, concentrated, bold style of Syrah is very attractive to me and so despite the opportunity to make Syrah from other appellations, I choose to return to Paso Robles for this variety.

The 2005 vintage has the typical deep purple color with a bit of ruby in the hues. The aromas are of cassis, plums, oak and leather. The bouquet delivers notes of vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate thick rich flavors of sweet blackberry and fully ripened plums mingle with a bit of mocha and chocolate. The texture is round and soft and the tannins are well integrated and provide a smooth supple texture. The lengthy finish is loaded with smoky toasted oak.
