The "R" Petite Sirah from the Enver Salman Vineyard continues to impress the judges; The 2005 edition has earned Best of Class and Best of Region Honors at the 2007 California State Fair Wine Competition. I attribute the success of this wine to the fact we are able to deliver the depth and richness for which Petite Sirah is coveted, yet we have been successful in keeping the tannins and astringency in check.
The color of the 2005 Petite Sirah is typical deep purple. The aromas of this year's wine are exceptionally dense. The scents of concentrated black fruits are complimented by a rich bouquet featuring a smoky mocha-chocolate character that was contributed by aging exclusively on French oak. The wine's flavor is of ripe boysenberry blackberries that are kept bright and succulent by the wine's higher than average acid. The texture is rich and creamy, and full of well-rounded tannins. The finish is long and lingers for minutes after swallowing the wine.
I usually promote this wine as ready for enjoyment, and like its predecessors it is. However, given the added structure of this vintage I suspect it will be the longest lived Petite Sirah I have produced to date. The 2005 Petite Sirah will reward those patient enough to give it a few years in the cellar with additional complexity and softness.
