2015 Malbec, Fiddlehead Vineyard

Although Malbec is one of the five major varieties planted in Bordeaux along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, acreage planted to Malbec in Bordeaux has been in decline for over half a century ever since a devastating frost in 1956.  Malbec’s susceptibility to frost and Merlot’s ever growing popularity are the most significant reasons for Malbec’s loss of favor in France.  On the other hand, in Argentina Malbec has flourished.  Malbec is Argentina’s most widely planted red variety (50,000 acres) almost twice that of Syrah. The Argentines grow vast quantities of Malbec at altitude, 2,800-5,000 feet, and they attribute the depth of flavors and intense color of their wines to the grapes’ increased proximity to the sun, claiming that the reduced atmospheric filtration of the sun’s rays deepens the pigments in the grape’s skins. That is one of the reasons that when fruit from the Fiddlehead Vineyard in El Dorado’s Fairplay appellation became available I jumped on it.  The Fiddlehead Vineyard is and is planted at 2,500 feet, and like Barbera, Malbec seems to blossom up out of the heat of the central valley and away from the valley’s deep fertile soils.  In El Dorado County yields are much reduced and the grapes develop a robust color and the resulting wines have a tremendous depth of flavor.

The 2015 Malbec has an intense inky deep color and a hue that is a gorgeous shade of purple.  Malbec is the most ‘Terroir’ driven wine we produce.  Aromas of plum, pomegranate, and tobacco leaf are accompanied by significant notes of smoke, forest floor and loam. A year and a half in small barrels has provided the bouquet with nuances of dark chocolate, and cacao.  On the palate concentrated flavors of black currants and a unique combination of chocolate and mineral dust are delivered by a wine with a soft luscious texture.  The tannins, while present, are plush and enhance a creamy texture without adding drying astringency.  The finish features cedar, chalk and deeply toasted oak that lingers well.  For those of you that enjoy old world wines this is the closest we come in our portfolio of offerings.
