2015 Charbono, Sierra Foothills

Charbono is a grape that hails from the mountainous Savoie region of Eastern France where it is known as Douce Noir.  It has flourished in the New World especially in Argentina where it is known as Bonarda and is the second most widely planted red variety after Malbec.  Here in California Charbono has had a varied and colorful history; for years it produced wines that were mislabeled as Barbera and Pinot Noir, and these wines won accolades and awards masquerading as these varieties.  It wasn’t until 1999 and the implementation of DNA testing, that some of these mislabeled vineyards were identified as Douce Noir.  Charbono remains a fairly rare and undiscovered variety; there are only 75 acres grown in California.

Charbono thrives in growing regions that have enough heat to ripen this late season variety but also provide for significant diurnal temperature variations during ripening; that is warm days coupled with cool nights.  Given our typical Gold Country Indian summer coupled with brisk autumn air rolling down out of the Mountains, the Sierra Foothills provide ideal conditions for Charbono.  The 2015 edition of “R” Charbono comes from four Sierra Foothills Vineyards; the Lemley Ranch and Piedras Grande vineyards of the Fairplay appellation in El Dorado County, Logan’s Rockwall Vineyard off of the Fiddletown Road, and Dick Coopers Ranch here in the Amador County.

The 2015 Charbono has an inky purple-black color that clings to the interior of a wineglass providing it with a soft rose colored glow.  The aroma of the 2015 Charbono features ripe blue black fruits; currants, cassis, and blackberry preserves along with notes of crushed pine needles and forest floor. In addition, there are scents of smoked meats and tar that I find reminiscent of Malbec and Brunello. There is an inviting bouquet of vanilla/chocolate malt that provides more than just a suggestion of dessert.  On the pallet concentrated flavors of ripe smoky blackberries precede those of creamy dark chocolate.  There is significant structure to this wine and the tannins are substantial and while they may benefit from a year or two in the cellar they are mature and not overly aggressive or drying, but do lend to a bit of a chalkiness in the finish.  This is a big meaty, smoky woodsy wine that cries out for roasted or braised red meats and game.
