 2015 Touriga, Lodi

Most wine drinkers familiar with Touriga recognize it as one of the grape varieties used in the production of the dessert wine; Port.  This is not unexpected because Touriga is the most favored variety for the production of Port, but what is not widely known is that Touriga also makes a terrific table wine.  As Portuguese vintners modernize their wine industry there has been a renewed interest in Touriga and some critics contend that the finest of today’s red table wines from Portugal more often than not contain Touriga.  In the nineteenth century before the scourge of Phyloxera destroyed the vineyards of Portugal, Touriga was a widely planted variety.  Unfortunately, one hundred years ago when the Portuguese replanted their vineyards Touriga fell out of favor due to its low yields and it was replaced with more productive varieties. But as the old saying goes, ‘It is hard to keep a good man down’ so it is with Touriga, and its ability to produce wines with depth of fruit, color, and tannin has it back in the good graces of Portuguese winemakers.

The 2015 Touriga has a deep purple color with bright youthful hues.  Along with Grenache, Touriga is one of the most fruit driven wines we produce.  The aromas are floral and bursting at the seams with loads of black cherries, Marion berry and boysenberry.  In addition to the dark fruits there is a perfume; honeysuckle, lilac, linalool, and lavender all come to mind. The fruit is just too dominant for there to be much of a bouquet, but if one lets the wine warm and you search for it you may find a whiff of hazelnut and mocha.  On the pallet, the flavors are rich and creamy as well as juicy and succulent.  Fully ripened, almost sweet flavors of black raspberry, currant, and plum transition through to a mid palate that reveals the influence of the barrel; toasted oak and milk chocolate.  Mild tannins provide a soft lengthy finish to this wine.

Ever since the first release of Jeff's Touriga I have been a fan. The nose is filled with dark fruits as well as the palate. Well balanced with mild tannins compared to old world. Fantastic!
