2015 Syrah, Paso Robles

2015 SYRAH

Paso Robles

We produced our first Syrah from the 1997 vintage.  For almost two decades we purchased grapes from three different ‘Estrella River Plain’ vineyards in Paso Robles.  Therefore, Syrah is one of just four of our wines not to carry a vineyard designation.  The wines were very successful, but over the course of time Steve Carter sold his vineyard and Dan Westigard succumbed to cancer.  We limped along for a couple of years with reduced production while Steve Carter developed a new vineyard west of highway 101 at about 1500’. The 2015 wine is our first to include grapes grown on Steve’s new Three Way Vineyard. We are excited about this inclusion as you may notice this vintage has ratcheted up the dense black fruit flavors and added another layer of substance to the wine.  Trevor and I were so impressed with the wine from Steve’s grapes that we bottled two barrels of the Three Way Syrah.  We will release it sometime this fall.

The 2015 vintage has a deep purple color accompanied by youthful almost florescent hues.  One sniff identifies this wine as a ‘New World’ Syrah.  The aromas are clean and bright dominated by scents of dense ripe jammy boysenberry and ripe black raspberry.  The earthy terroir driven flavors, common in ‘Old World’ Syrah, are relegated to the back seat as there is just a hint of flint and mineral in the background.  The bouquet features a unique smoky scent that comes from barrels toasted over a hickory flame.  On the palate, viscous, savory, and succulent flavors of blue and black fruits mingle with those of hazelnut and chocolate.  The texture of the 2015 vintage is luscious and round; the tannins are mature and add richness without astringency.  There is a pleasant toasted oak creaminess to the finish that lingers well after the wine is gone. I am not one to suggest wine and food pairings, but short-ribs braised in a liquid featuring wild mushrooms is my favorite with Syrah.  A dollop of blackberry jam to the braising liquid might seal the deal.
