Tannat is a grape variety that hails from the Madiran appellation in Southwest France. It is renowned for its high levels of tannin and it is not uncommon for Tannat producers to add Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to soften the wine. While never achieving any great notoriety in Europe, Tannat was introduced to South America by Basque immigrants with much better results. In fact Tannat is considered the ‘National Grape’ of Uruguay. In the new world Tannat has been blended with the likes of Pinot Noir and Merlot resulting in wines of a softer style. Here at Jeff Runquist Wines, we have embraced this new world style, and although we offer a 100% varietal Tannat, we do so having employed fermentation techniques designed to produce an approachable wine more like those from Uruguay than from the Basque regions of Southwest France.
The color of the 2014 Tannat is deep, almost inky. This wine has a magenta hue and this sheen clings to the interior walls of a wine glass. The aroma is loaded with concentrated black fruits, cassis, currants and pomegranate. Notes of mineral, cedar and tobacco contribute a character that is reminiscent of Bordeaux. Aging for a year and a half in small barrels contributes a bouquet of smoky toasted oak. The flavors of the 2014 Tannat has terrior driven notes where the jamy concentrated blackberry is paired with a dusty earthiness that contributes a mineral chalky edge to the finish. The tannins while substantial are not aggressive. We age tannat longer than most of our wines; eighteen months in barrel and another ten months in the bottle. Nevertheless, this is one of the few Runquist wines that might further soften with a year or two in the cellar. This is a big rich cool weather wine that begs for braised meats, stews, and cassoulet.
