2015 Tempranillo, Liberty Oaks Vineyard, Lodi
Liberty Oaks Vineyard, Lodi
Originating in Spain where it is known as the country’s ‘Noble Grape,’ Tempranillo is now grown successfully throughout the new world. In Spain the region of Rioja is primarily devoted to Tempranillo and it is produced in a variety of styles; ranging from Gran Reserva that is aged in a combination of barrel and bottle for five years before release, to the Rioja style wines that may not see any time in a barrel and are often marketed within a year of the harvest. Having had great success producing ‘fruit forward’ wines, and given the low acidity of Tempranillo we took more of the ‘Crianza’ approach in which the wine is aged in barrel for about a year and briefly bottle aged before release.
The 2015 Tempranillo has ruby color of medium depth with garnet hues. The aroma is predominantly that of light red fruits; raspberry and strawberry. Ten months in small oak barrels provides subtle whiffs of oak, toast and ash to the bouquet. The featured flavors are of creamy red raspberry and red cherry along with toasted oak and are delivered by a wine with a soft creamy texture. The tannins are soft and supple and add richness and viscosity without even a suggestion of astringency. This is a soft delightful red wine to accompany lighter fare.
